We believe every day’s a school day on a boat! That’s why we built Nautical Know-How, dedicated to answering your questions. Even better, if it can’t answer your question immediately, you can request it, and we’ll add it to our knowledge base.
The ocean covers nearly three-quarters of our planet’s surface area, comprising 1.3 billion cubic kilometres of water. It is the world’s single largest ecosystem playing a central role in supporting all life on Earth. It is also the provider of many services and resources that directly support human health, societies and economies (Global Ocean Commission Report 2014).
Protecting the marine environment has long been in the hearts and minds of those enjoying the water for leisure. However, the recent increase in public consciousness about climate change and plastics has brought a broader audience to the importance of protecting the environment, which can only be good.
The module discusses how recreational mariners impact the marine environment and what we can do to minimise it. From waste to maintenance, everything we do has an impact and whilst we cannot eradicate it, we can behave in ways that reduce the effect we’re having.
On completing this module, you’ll earn the marine environment insignia!
