Remaining safe at sea is the primary task of any skipper. Our responsibility extends to keeping the crew, passengers and vessel as safe as possible.

We need to know what safety equipment we carry, how to use it, and what preventative protocols to follow. Planning and preparation are vital aspects of safety, but being prepared for different eventualities can help if we get into difficulty.

Skills covered

This module introduces various safety equipment commonly found on recreational vessels. You’ll learn about the VHF radio DSC function and how to make a MayDay call, along with life jackets, flares and general advice on remaining safe at sea.

On completing this module, you’ll earn the safety insignia!
