The wind is referred to as backing (it backs) when it moves to blow from a direction that is anticlockwise from its current direction.

A sail is said to be backed when it is sheeted or held to windward, i.e. opposite to its normal sheeted position. This is commonly used when a sailing vessel is Hove To.
